Welcome to Derma Essentia!!
In the present world of beauty, plenty of skin care products are available, and it is impossible to shop for personal skin care products without being worried. We are always inundated with warnings to avoid various ingredients like parabens, aluminium, and sulfates. These buzzwords have become an intrinsic part of our beauty vocabulary, but still, you may not know what these words are and why they are avoided in our skincare regime. Let's learn about parabens and sulfates and their harsh effects on our skin:

What are Parabens and Sulfates?

Parabens- Parabens are the additives used in cosmetic products. The parabens are "a family of related chemicals that are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetic products." They are extensively used as preservatives in modern-day cosmetic products. Sulfates- Sulfates are surfactants that are commonly used as a fat emulsifier, wetting agent, detergent in cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. They possess excellent cleansing, foaming and some microbicidal activity.  Are parabens and sulfates harmful to skin? Yes, they are. Despite possessing antimicrobial and preservative activity, parabens and sulfates have faced a close perusal over the last few years. In recent years, various studies have confirmed the presence of paraben compounds in the female breast, and it has been deduced that paraben exerts possible estrogenic effects by mimicking the activity of female hormone estrogen. Higher estrogen levels can induce an increase in the division of breast cells and tumour growth that can ultimately lead to breast cancer and reproductive issues in females.

On the other hand, Sulfates are potential cleansing agents, but inferences from various studies have shown that sulfates can provoke changes in the physiological properties of skin. It can injure the natural barriers functions of skin and can increase irritability of skin making it more brittle and dry.  However, several studies investigating the health effects of parabens and sulfates are conflicting, and there is an insufficient amount of data suggesting severe consequences from paraben use and exposure to warrant drastic avoidance measures or government regulations.

What's the bottom line?

It is advisable that you should avoid the use of paraben and sulfates skin care products to prevent ourselves from severe ill effects. The bottom line is to check the composition and presence of these preservatives in skin care products. One can quickly identify their presence in products, and if there is any insecurity, one can consult a dermatologist for their professional opinion.

Don't worry here is the good news! The Derma Essentia Skincare range is free from parabens and sulfates. Choose sulfate and paraben free skin care products and gift your skin the feeling of security.
